What does moisturiser do?
At its most basic level, moisturisers are designed to help treat dry skin and prevent it from drying out again in the future. That’s not all moisturiser does though, and depending on which moisturiser you choose, it can protect your skin from harmful sun rays, slow down the aging process (wrinkles) and even tackle issues such as hyperpigmentation. It’s important to choose the right moisturiser for your skin in order to maximise its benefits.
Face moisturisers vs. body moisturisers
When choosing a moisturiser, it’s important to get one that is designed for the area of the body you are using it on. Body moisturisers are thick and heavy as they are designed for thicker areas of skin, particularly those hardened areas around the elbows and knees. The skin on the face is thinner and more delicate, so a body moisturiser can end up blocking pores which can lead to acne breakouts. Face creams, however, are designed to focus on hydrating the skin without blocking pores and use a different set of ingredients to achieve this.
How does moisturiser work?
Your skin is a protective layer, guarding the underlying tissue from environmental dangers that can damage it. Skin becomes dry due to external factors such as weather and seasonal changes, an unhealthy diet that does not contain enough fruit and vegetables and lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol consumption and caffeine consumption. All of these factors reduce your skin's water content, which is where moisturiser comes in.
There are two ways in which moisturisers work to keep your skin hydrated. The first is that the emollients in moisturiser, for example Shea Butter, replace and restore moisture on the outer layers of skin which has been lost. The second is that the occlusives in moisturiser, for example Argan Oil, can create a barrier which traps moisture in the skin and stops it from escaping.
Which moisturiser is best?
Choosing the right moisturiser will depend on what you are trying to achieve. As mentioned earlier, there are moisturisers for your face, body and for tackling specific issues such as hyperpigmentation. Below are Epara’s best moisturiser products and their key benefits
